Damage Limitation
Phenethylamines are stored in highest concentrations in the
brain and nervous system. Hence these tissues are at greatest
risk of free radical attack as a result of the redox cycling of
phenethylamines (stimulants). The myths that ecstasy use can
cause destruction of the nervous system and brain damage, cited
by the tabloids, probably stems from these findings. Moderate
intakes of phenethylamines appear to be handled well, however,
excessive quantities can cause oxidative damage by free radical
attack as the body's protective systems just cannot handle the
load. Unless these radicals are removed the side-effects
mentioned above will occur with sustained use.
We all know the physical and mental side-effects of partying
hard, but there are ways to minimise the oxidative damage and
thus make ecstatic partying safer. The key, as always, is
protection, and knowing the mechanism of action the only
conclusion must be this:
Those who take phenethylamines should also take
antioxidant supplements.
