L-Carnitine Detoxification
Ammonia DetoxificationStudies ave shown that carnitine can enhance the removal of
ammonia and hence its detoxification4,6,7. Toxicological studies
have revealed a marked protective effect of carnitine against
ammonia poisoning. Carnitine works to lower ammonia levels by
increasing its incorporation into urea, which is subsequently
excreted in the urine8, similar to ornithine and arginine in
this respect.
Several other potential biomedical functions have been reported
for carnitine. It is thought to influence the levels of certain
neurotransmitters (such as taurine) in brain tissue9, and the
detoxification of certain drugs10. More recently, studies have
shown that carnitine and its derivatives are free radical
scavengers and iron chelators ie. function as antioxidants.
