Selenium intakes and Cancer
High doses of selenium in treating cancers of the blood were
tried as long ago as 1915. Selenium can reduce the likelihood of
tumours. Out of the 55 studies published since 1949, 49 found
that selenium inhibited cancer. The plausibility of a link
between the mineral and cancer was increased when selenium was
found was found to be a component of glutathione peroxidase in
1973. This enzyme is known to protect macromolecules from
oxidative stress.
