Jonquil Cook 
I was born in Lewisham in 1969 and educated at Addey and Stanhope
School in Deptford before pursuing a theatrical career. This involved three
years of dance and drama ( and much partying and showing off) at a North
London theatre school followed by six years of sporadic work on stage and
TV. It was during one interminably boring long run playing a bit-part at
the National Theatre that I began printmaking- primarily as a means of maintaining
what little sanity I had left and as a foothold in some world other than
that of being as actress.
I have been working on etchings at the Mornington Road Centre in New Cross
for the past 18 months, gradually making the leap from a purely craft-based
technical standpoint to a position on the fringes of Fine Art practice and
the thematic development of ideas.
These local centres provide almost all the opportunities of art schools
without the pressures, as well as creating an opening for community colaboration
such as the Seven Ways exhibition.
Previous projects include local arts group, the Conscious Collective, of
which I was a founder member, involved in putting on great parties, festivals
(including the Urban Free Festival in Deptford and a stage at Glastonbury
in 1992) and performance in the Deptford area, concentrating specifically
on design and publicity aspects.
Current themes revolve around the concept of "flight" and, having
worked as a life model for the last year, a preoccupation with the drawing
of the human figure.
