Damage Limitation

Studies in the last few years1,2,3,4,5 have established that
phenethylamines can undergo certain chemical reactions in the
body (Redox cycling reactions) that liberate very large
quantities of free radicals. Free radicals are substances with
extra unpaired electrons which makes them highly reactive. Their
trademark action is biochemical and cellular damage. Radicals
are linked to a wide variety of diseases and conditions,
including Heart disease, stroke, cancers, emphysema and
neurological disorders.

While our bodies has mechanisms to protect us against background
levels of radicals excessive amounts produced by ecstatic
partying, alcohol, smoky environments etc. can overwhelm the
protective systems and damage occurs. The short-term symptoms
are fatigue, mood swings, mental dysfunction and physical
exhaustion ie. come-downs. Background free radicals are
produced by white blood cells as the primary means of killing
bacteria, viruses and other microbial invaders.
