Vitamin Safety

Some years ago two prestigious scientific committees examined
the safety of over-the-counter vitamins and minerals. The first
was an ad hoc committee established by the American Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) to study vitamin and mineral drug
products for over the counter human use. The committee examined
the available scientific data and obtained expert testimony from
both the industrial and the scientific communities1.

The second study, prepared for the FDA, was undertaken by the
life sciences research office of the american federation of
american societies for experimental biology. This investigation
was particularly concerned with the feasibility of identifying
adverse health effects of both vitamins and minerals with
special relationship to "people who consume dietary supplements
without medical supervision" et al2.
