Normally the body has adequate defence against free radical
damage either in the form of chemical antioxidants or in the
form of enzymes that destroy free radicals. However, these
mechanisms can break down as a result of poor diet,
excessive/ecstatic partying, environmental pollution, and it is
then that the body is at a high risk of free radical damage
leading to disease.
Hydroxyl radicals, the most potent oxidant known, can attack any
organic substance found in cells. They account for a large part
of the damage done by radiation and are thought to be the
principal damaging agent involved in arthritis.
